Air Rifle suggestions - (for competition)
While I'm waiting around for the s2thtf, I thought I'd get involved in competition air rifle shooting. I'm in an area (the city) that doesn't have many centerfile rifle ranges. Air, I can do in my basement without attracting attention. I've done small, medium and large centerfire handgun competition so this will be quite a switch.
Any suggestions? I'm clueless here. I'm open to either .177 or .22. Thanks. |
Re: Air Rifle suggestions - (for competition)
Hi- I'm not a competition air rifle shooter. I can say that a Benjamin Sheridan in .20 is a great all around rifle for the money. It will hold a quarter at 75 feet. This one is eleven years old - it's a tack driver. Four pumps kills squirrels at 35 feet.

Re: Air Rifle suggestions - (for competition)
I compete in Air Pistol....and have competed in Air Rifle....they have 3 position shooting...standing, kneeling, prone......lots of equipment required....pants, jackets, shoes, gloves, spotting scopes....lots of stuff....I did not like it due to all the stuff.
I now understand they have some more basic competition divisions....might want to look into those. i think it is called "Sporter Class".....they still look like guns and not some sci-fi equipment. Best wedsite for competitoon shooting and equipment is www.Pilkguns.com First off it will be required to be 0.177 cal. I think what you might be after would be a Daisy Avanti 753 or 853 single stroke pneumatic...not very powerful...but great for training and shooting and even competition. They cost about $250 - $350 depending on the model and the sights. These are true entry level competition rifles. http://www.pilkguns.com/sporterar.shtml Top end equipment is crazy expensive in the $1000 - $2000 range. |
Re: Air Rifle suggestions - (for competition)
If you want to compete, that depends a lot on what's done in your area. And I'll warn you--there's considerably less organized competition in airguns than there is in firearms. It's not unusual for people to drive halfway across the US for an airgun meet.
The Olympic stuff is always in 177, but there is also field target shooting, which any caliber can generally be used. It ranges out to 65-75 yards however, making practicing indoors at home a bit unlikely. Field target is intended to simulate airgun hunting, so the courses are often outdoors and are varied to make them interesting. The Pilkguns/Target Talk forum is the largest one I've found for Olympic-style shooting. http://www.targettalk.org/ One general forum for airgunning is the Kitching airgun forum: http://www.network54.com/Forum/79537/ I see now that they have an associated forum just for field target too: http://www.network54.com/Forum/451309/ With field target, you can blow just as much money on a gun as you can for Olympic shooting--but there are also sporter classes that you can get into for a lot less. -end- |

Re: Air Rifle suggestions - (for competition)
Thanks to all for the suggestions. Regarding travel for competitions, the next town over has a club with a private range. They also sponsor competitons from all over. So I think I'm safe. I just wanted to be a bit more informed before I walked through the froont door. Thanks again.

Wish I could help. The closest I've got to any comp airgun is a Tau Brno C02 pistol.
